Hello Hypocrites! Let's discuss Michael Moore's film Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) ...
Before watching Moore's film, I never thought capitalism can affect America in so many ways. I once heard someone say that capitalism is a huge cause of global warming.
And my response was like : ???
Then, I had government class during senior year. I learned about capitalism, and from the textbook, it sounded great. The idea of free enterprise sounded fair, and did not seem as toxic as it is portrayed in his film. Also, my older brother always insisted that capitalism is the best way to go.

However, my views instantly changed once Professor Nielson tied us down to our desks, and forced us to watch the film. I am glad he did it, because now I have a wider view on Capitalism. During the film it is clear that the type of rhetoric Moore uses in the film is humor. Yes, it always great to laugh at terrible situation, and his humor narration connected the audience. Meaning that, it made the audience engage on his humorous comments. He also seemed to use an emotional appeal in this film. For instance, he interviews families who have lost loved ones and continue to drown in debt and he also shows workers who have tragically lost their jobs. For example, one guy had lost his wife at a young age, and Walmart refused to help him pay. He worked for Walmart almost his whole life, and he had bills over 80,000..and Walmart did not offer ANY support to his family. The camera records these individuals crying and explaining their sad stories. These scenes popped out to me the most because it showed me how Capitalism can be toxic.
Specifically speaking, there was a certain part in the film that blew my mind. Mr.Moore explained big businesses like Bank of America, Citi Bank and Nestle (There were tons of others) have been involved in scandalous crimes. It is crazy to think such popular/well liked companies can turn out to be so flawed and evil. For instance, he explained that big companies like these can buy YOUR, HIS, HER, YOUR NEIGHBOR, THAT GUY PICKING HIS NOSE, AND ANYBODIES insurance policies and make money off your death??? MY MIND WAS LIKE:
-because how can America possibly let this happen? It sounds so evil and so ugly. In documents it showed that a lot of people who die are referred to as "dead peasants." That is such a dehumanizing term to refer to someone who has just passed, not to mention someone who made you richer by death. All of this is allowed because of Capitalism according to his film. I think is insane how much money they can make off of a dead person and leave the family in debt. I also learned that a woman who dies around 25, provides the most money. Since, women are least likely to die comparing to men. \
